"Anvil" Coffee Table

While I was sitting a group show in Lemont, PA, a couple with their infant son came into the show, looked around, and asked about one of my sculptures on display.  They loved the piece but were more interested in my making them a coffee table.  I explained that I normally did not make furniture but agreed to bring them several walnut slabs that might work.  I had forgotten about a walnut sculpture that I called "Anvil" and looked like a table, which had traveled with me from CA and was not yet finished.  The Housers liked the figured grain in the walnut boards, but they loved "Anvil".  The only problem was that as a table it was not very stable.  So I fabricated a base out of three pieces of highly figured walnut and fastened a 3/8" thick steel plate in a recess in the base to increase the stability.  It was worth the extra work to produce one of my few functional sculptures.
