Sculptures by JMikk
This piece illustrates the original shape of the log cut from the tree by arborist: a main trunk and four secondary branches. The sculpted recesses were chosen to expose the rich interior grain of the branches, leaving the natural edges to outline the work and give a continuous visual path around the work—a signature of all of my sculptures. If you look closely at the natural edges, especially on the base, you can see a pattern of little etchings into the surface. These etchings were caused by a colony of bark beetles which ate the cambium and a little of the sapwood’s surface. One other minor feature is the straight line in the grain of the left-most arm: it is the record of a pruned little branch a few years before this tree was cut down.
