Ten years ago I began to work on bas relief figurative sculptures, a major departure from the abstract sculptures which were inspired by the wood form and grain. I had collected a number of straight-grained logs of cherry and elm, and it seemed both inspiring and challenging to sculpt the human form in these beautiful pieces of wood.
